So my 2012 race calendar has changed – I just canceled my trip to Florida to do the Goofy Challenge.
I just got a nice call from my mechanic that my car needs $1800 worth of repairs. Merry Christmas to me
However – I’d booked my flight with Southwest, so I was able to cancel with no penalty. I did accrue a penalty for canceling my Disney reservation within 45 days, but I’d rather spend the $200 than the $650 (+ actual expenses while I was there).
Other positives:
- I get two of my vacation days back!
- I won’t compromise my Houston race
- I don’t need to hang out by myself at “the Happiest Place on Earth” for several days
- I know this will make my coach happy!
- I can use my CrossFit groupon
I feel a tiny twinge of disappointment, but it’s really pretty tiny. This trip was originally supposed to be with a friend, but he had to back out due to injury. As I got more focused on Houston I backed off on any big goals I had for the race, so really it’d just have been “to do it”. I’ve done enough marathons for that.
I’d been torn about training for Houston – did I start tapering now (3 weeks before Disney) or wait a week (3 weeks before my target race). How much would the Goofy Challenge impact my performance the following week – physically as well as mentally? I’m actually seeing this change in plans as somewhat a good thing.
Sorry to hear about the car! That’s always rough.
If you’re around this weekend though, I think Court and a few other friends are running up at Pine Valley Ranch Saturday morning. Probably going 20 to 25 miles! Let us know if you’re interested!
thanks for the invite, but I’m off to Phoenix on Friday for the holidays!
I think this is a good thing (not the car, the Goofy Challenge). If Houston is the main focus, I’m not sure that Goofy would have been the best idea one week before the race.
Absolutely. I wouldn’t have wanted to push it too hard, and then at that point, why bother? I’ve already done the Goofy Challenge. I don’t just need “one more marathon”
that’s a bummer! but, like others say – if Houston is the A race why jeopardize with anything in FL. however, i’ll be at disney again this year and we could have met up!
as for my personal running expenses — i’m pretty cheap/frugal in general – running and not-running. i don’t sign up for many races and we usually have hotel points for the ones we travel to (so, no hotel cost). i don’t buy many clothes (and didn’t buy any shoes in 2011) and had a decent stash of free gu from various blog giveaways, etc. that was drained recently with my husband’s marathon training but i haven’t been using it recently anyway with my lack of running. we’ll have to buy more gels in 2012!
